SAWG Bridge Tour, October 11, 2007
Despite the forecast of rain, the Bridge SAWG group toured the Tappan Zee Bridge on October 11, 2007. Together with project team members and NYSTA bridge managers, SAWG members had a close-up view of the bridge from the Nyack landing to the main spans on board the NYSTA maintenance tug. At the main spans, members disembarked the tug and spent time atop the "floating" foundations where they were able to touch the piers and concrete substructure supporting the superstructure steelwork. After the boat trip, members were taken to the Tarrytown landing and traversed the steel walkway under the road deck of the East Deck Truss spans. Members also traveled along the walkway for almost 1,000 feet with much discussion about maintenance activities, deck replacement and connection complexities. Just as the rain started the tour ended with a brief discussion in the NYSTA maintenance facility adjacent to the toll plaza.
